SoCon09 was deemed the “un-conference” – conference. An event designed to get people in digital technology talking about PR, emerging technologies, and the various roles social media plays in marketing and technology.
I met several impressive and enterprising people at the conference. To this crowd social media is old hat; everyone was very savvy when it came to social networking platforms and utilizing these services to enhance their businesses and marketing programs.
This was the first event I’ve been a part of where Twitter was the most used social networking platform at the conference. And, Engauge represented quite well from the Tweetdeck. Check out the stats from the day. What’s interesting is how a collaborative effort of a few hundred people Tweeting a single event can elevate the event the top of Twitter Trends. Here’s a screenshot of the Tweetvolume from the day. We made it to the top of trends for the day and helped slow down the Twitter bandwidth throughout the world!!!

SoCon09 drew a diverse group of professionals. I enjoyed listening to these smart and savvy people talk about their areas of expertise in subjects that will help my overall approach to a client’s social strategy.

Some valuable nuggets of knowledge I took away from the breakout session with James Andrews, “Social Media in PR”, are that you can never plan enough when it comes to a social networking strategy and there are so many technology partnerships that can forge deeper connection points with consumers.

I lead a breakout session in the afternoon – “The Future of Social Media.” The group I presented for was tremendous. There was an interesting exchange of dialogue and thought around what will be the next big steps for social media. Some in the group felt social media would one day die while another vigorously defended the craft.

Reflecting on the conference, I left with tons of new contacts and am excited about the dialogue that will spark in the near future.
